With the stroke of a pen, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed what Brazilian and international environmental and human rights organizations have called the “death warrant for the Xingu river” by signing a contract that will allow for the construction of the Belo Monte mega-dam. As Survival International reports:
Experts have warned that the project has serious design flaws. It was described by Walter Coronado Antunes, former Environment Secretary of São Paulo state, as ‘the worst engineering project in the history of hydroelectric dams in Brazil, and perhaps of any engineering project in the world.’
Indigenous people will have their lives and livelihoods adversely affected if not totally uprooted. But as Lula said, “I think this is a victory for Brazil’s energy sector,” which means, the money for Brazil’s energy industry has triumphed over the human rights of the Indians who live alongside the river and the area where the mega-dam is to be built.
