The Most Hilariously Effective Signs Supporting Gay Marriage

We’ve seen most of the ones on this list and of those we hadn’t seen before, this one kills us.

What a difference a Green makes. Adam Bandt, Australia’s sole Green MP in its lower house, was the one member majority that forced “federal politicians to canvass the legalisation of gay marriage in their electorates,” reports NZ Herald News. While Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who has held a hard line against marriage equality legislation, has tried her best to put the question of gay marriage on the back burner, the Greens have followed through on their election promise to fight for marriage rights for same-sex couples.

This is the kind of political will that garners respect and loyalty from their supporters. I look forward to the day when Greens in the United States can play a similar role in doggedly pursuing a truly progressive political agenda in our government.

Indeed, the myopia of “gay rights” often throws broader socio-political progressivism under the bus in order to extend our own civil liberties. In New York, Empire State Pride Agenda’s endorsement of Andrew Cuomo is an example of supports a candidate who has said to be for marriage equality but whose attacks on organized labor, demonization of public employees, slashing of social services, and essentially gutting working people, the under- and unemployed, and the poor, is not the kind of politician that will help a majority of who aren’t already upwardly mobile and interested in getting hitched for the benefits.

The next printing of a guide designed to educate immigrants applying for Canadian citizenship will contain references to gay rights, including the fact that Canada has extended civil marriage rights to same-sex couples.

THE WORST PRO-GAY MARRIAGE POSTER

Hands down one of the most treacherous marriage equality arguments ever articulated. Obviously pandering to GOPers with its perverse “conservative reasoning” to allow same-sex marriage, this poster proposes that gays throw reproductive rights of women under the bus for the “sake of the children” in order to win marriage rights. This is co-opting conservative rhetoric at its worst and a betrayal of the historic alliance between feminists and queers. If I ever saw this poster on the street, I would tear burn it down.

This isn’t progressive. It’s ass-backwards.
